Akureyri, Iceland - August 14, 2016

After two sea days, the first one very rough with a huge bang at 4:30 a.m., the second one calm but foggy, we arrived in Akureyri. It is the second largest urban area, called the capital of northern Iceland.  It has a population of 18,000.

This is not my idea of summer!  It was 46 and raining when we arrived at 8:00 this morning.  But we bundled up and went into town.  Since it was Sunday morning, the only things open were bakeries and coffee places.  So we walked up the hill to see the church.  It was designed by the same architect as the large church in Reykjavik.

We the went to the botanical garden, which was very impressive for a town of this size.  We did more walking, eventually ending up back downtown.  By that time lots of shops were open, so we checked them out.

We'd pretty much done Akureyri by noon, so we returned to the ship.  It did warm up a bit, and we never did get rained on.  On the way out of the fjord we saw lots of whales and porpoises.
