Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas - February 18, 2014

After two days at sea we arrived at 8:00 in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands.  After breakfast we set out for the town of Charlotte Amalie, about a mile and a half away.  We had a map for a walking tour, but we had a lot of trouble finding things.

St. Thomas is now a U.S. possession, but in the past it was British, so cars drive on the left side of the road.  But oddly, the steering wheels are all on the left.

Among the buildings we saw were Fort Christian, which dates to the 17th century.

The St. Thomas synagogue was built in 1833.  It's the second oldest synagogue in the western hemisphere and one of only four in the world with a sand floor.

We climbed 'The 99 Steps' (actually 103, but who's counting) to the 1829 hotel.

It was rather warm, in the low 80s, and we're both a bit out of shape, so we were glad to get back to the ship in time for lunch.  In spite of this being a lush green island, we found almost no birds.

At about 2:30, while we were sitting in Skywalkers Lounge reading, we had a short downpour.  We left St. Thomas at 4:30, on our way to Antigua tomorrow.
