Puerto Montt, Chile - March 17, 2014

After another rather rocky, chilly, overcast day at sea, we arrived in Puerto Montt.  The information I had was that this was not a particularly interesting place, and that proved to be true.  But at least the weather wasn't bad.  In fact, by afternoon it was about 58 degrees and sunny, a huge improvement over the last week.

We took the tender ashore and walked into town.

Next to the Plaza de Armas was the cathedral, which was built almost entirely of alerce, a local tree that is similar to a redwood.

There were a few other unusual buildings, but otherwise there wasn't much.  We then walked back to the pier and continued in the other direction.  There we found a craft market with lots of really nice local crafts, including  knitted items and leather goods.  And the prices were reasonable.  We bought a miniature leather hat to hang on our Christmas tree, and a woven wool wall hanging.

This area is also where the fishing boats come in, and they were very colorful.

We returned to the ship by lunch time and spent the afternoon sitting in the sun on our balcony.  By the time we sailed, the clouds had cleared over the mountains.

We left Puerto Montt at 6:00, bound for Valparaiso.
