Spring has arrived in Florida. There are things blooming everywhere and trees are leafing out. It was a beautiful, if fast, drive.
We left at 7:45 and arrived at 4:30 p.m. We took Florida's
turnpike, which is a very nice toll road that extends through most of Florida. About every 35 miles there is a service plaza
with food, gas, and rest rooms.
Our first stop when we arrived in Ft.
Lauderdale was at the Amtrak
station to pick up our bags. But now
there was another glitch. David's bag
had arrived there the previous day, but mine was not there. After making lots of calls, the Amtrak agent
was finally able to talk to a FedEx representative, who said there was a record
of my bag leaving Washington, but
then nothing. She said she would turn it
over to an investigator and call us back when she knew anything. So we left the station and checked into our
hotel, then drove to the airport to return the rental car. It was rush hour, so it took us 45 minutes to
drive seven miles. We made it with a
half hour to spare on the rental, to avoid another $129. We then took a cab back to the hotel. The driver was a maniac. I honestly thought we were going to end up in
intensive care, missing our ship. But we
made it intact, nerves frazzled. By bedtime we still hadn't heard anything back
from FedEx.
We stayed in a lovely inn in Ft. Lauderdale.
The neighborhood is full of small hotels that look like they belong in the 1950s.
