It was very windy, and the positioning was tricky. After two unsuccessful tries, we were finally
tied up in Horta, about 45 minutes late.
We were due at 10:00, so we
opted to have lunch before going shore.
The skies were cloudy and rain was predicted, so we packed our raincoats
and headed into town. The town is quite
hilly and the streets are narrow and winding, many paved with cobblestones. As we were consulting our map and trying to
figure out where we were, a lovely young lady came up to us and asked if we
needed help She recommended that we walk
a little farther to the beach. There, we
were told, we could also see the volcano
We went there, but the low clouds hid the volcano. We walked back through winding streets and
eventually found ourselves in the center of town. We found a pastry shop, and since it was
about 3:00 we stopped in for tea and
a pastel de nata, a custard tart
that's a Portuguese specialty. Just as
we were leaving the shop it started to rain, so we pulled on our raincoats and
walked back to the ship.
Miles walked: 4.7
