Ponta Delgada, Azores, Portugal - October 28, 2017

We arrived at 8:00.  The weather was still overcast, but warmer, in the low 70s.  This is a much larger city than Horta, with quite a few tall buildings.  After breakfast we left the ship and headed west, toward the older downtown area.  This is a city in black and white.  There was almost no color on anything, including the black basalt cobblestone streets and patterned sidewalks.  Again, the streets were very narrow and steep.  We stopped at a middle school to listen to the drum corps practice.  It could be heard blocks away.  We found a cemetery with very elaborate crypts.  And we also found an amazing public garden with huge trees and tropical plants.  We had a few sprinkles early on, but otherwise no rain.

We were back on the ship in time for a late lunch.  We had to do another tricky maneuver to exit the port.  We had to back out slowly, then turn around to head for our next destination. We left at 5:00 , and while we were having dinner we had a gorgeous sunset behind us.

Miles walked: 4.3
