The only reason cruise ships stop at Katakolon is that it's
just a short distance from ancient Olympia,
site of the first Olympics. We opted not
to go with the thousands of other tourists and instead took a winery tour. After a ten-minute bus ride we came to
Mercouri Winery. It was started in 1870
and the same family still operates it.
The grounds were lovely and the buildings charmingly rustic. They had an
amazing collection of old tools and equipment.
After the tour we had a light snack of Greek olives, feta cheese,
tomatoes, and crusty bread with olive oil, all accompanied by glasses of red
and white wine. We bought a bottle of
the red, as well as a bottle of their olive oil. On the bus trip back we passed through the
town. There are only 600 people living
here, but every one of them must be running a souvenir shop. We had planned to go ashore and check out the town after lunch but
it started to rain, so we didn't.
