Another fly in the ointment.
The Italian transportation union scheduled a strike for today, so our
plans to ride the train to Rome had
to be scrapped. Instead, we signed up
for a bus that would take us there, leave us on our own, and then return eight
hours later to take us back to the ship.
Because of the strike, the traffic was worse than normal, which
apparently is always horrendous. It took us 2 1/2 hours to get there, about
twice as long as it normally would have taken.
We still had about six hours to explore Rome. We found the Spanish Steps, the Trevi
Fountain, and the Victor Emanuel monument.
We wandered around looking for the Colosseum but never found it. You'd think something that big would be easy
to find, but we finally gave up. But we
did find many ruins scattered throughout the city. Late in the afternoon we had tea and dessert
at a cafe. David had tiramisu, I had a
cannolo made with sheep's milk ricotta and pistachios. Yum!
The bus trip back wasn't quite as long, and we arrived in time for a
quick dinner before the life boat drill.
Miles walked: 8.1
